Sustainability in infrastructure: An engine of change towards a greener future

Bosco Eguilior, Construction & Infra Managing Director

The infrastructure sector has historically been one of the pillars of economic and social development, providing the foundation for our cities, transport systems, energy and basic services. From houses and hospitals to airports and power grids, the impact of this sector on our everyday lives is undeniable. However, with the urgency of the climate crisis, the focus of this industry has begun to change. Today, it faces the dual challenge of maintaining economic and social development while aligning with global sustainability goals.

In the early 1990s, the sector began its transition to a low-carbon economy, pioneering the implementation of energy efficiency programs, the use of alternative raw materials, and the development of more sustainable products. This effort has been crucial in mitigating the environmental effects of construction and infrastructure, and its importance has only grown in recent decades.

Sustainability, however, is not a destination, but rather a constant evolving journey. The sustainable investments needed for this transition will be colossal in the coming years, and will require a joint effort from multiple parties: companies, communities, suppliers, investors and, of course, the financial sector. Here, the role of governments will also be key in establishing clear and predictable regulatory frameworks that build trust among all participants.

Sustainable finance and opportunities

The growing trend in financial markets towards sustainability has opened up new investment opportunities focused on ESG (environmental, social and governance) criteria. Companies that adopt these principles will not only contribute to a greener future, but will also be able to access more attractive sources of financing.

Sustainability performance is no longer just an ethical issue, but a differentiating factor that allows companies to stand out to investors and lenders.

ACCIONA, one of the leaders in sustainable infrastructure, has been a role model in this field. Since the issuance of its first green bond in 2016, the company has closed more than 70 sustainable transactions, including bilateral loans, syndicated financing, bonds and credit facilities. A key milestone in its strategy has been the launch of the Sustainable Impact Finance Framework in 2023, which introduces an innovative "Double Impact" structure, combining green finance with local positive impact initiatives.
