Overview

The ICE EUA Futures are deliverable contracts of EU Carbon Allowances used under the European Emissions Trading System. The contract size of the future represents (i.e. one lot ) is 1000 EUAs, each EUA being an Allowance which is an entitlement to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Allocation of allowances is done either by free allocation or via auctioning of allowances under a cap and trade system. In 2023, approx. 560 mln allowances were distributed free of charge (source BNEF, “EU ETS Compliance Database 2005-2025”). Approx. 430 mln allowances are auctioned in 2023. The EU Allowances are connected to the EUs goal of achieving climate neutrality in the EU by 2050 and a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Solactive BBVA EUA Carbon Futures Index tracks the performance of the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE Endex) December month EUA Carbon future rolling the exposure from the December contract into the next December contract prior to the expiry.
